The Long Goodbye is a 1973 American neo-noir satirical mystery crime thriller film directed by Robert Altman and based on Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel.
This movie is probably the best film adaptation of Phillip Marlowe's adventures with an excellent performance by Elliott Gould who is a 1953 character in a 1973 world!
The hero, without his intention, gets involved in a case containing stolen money, underworld, police, suicides, disappearances of people and of course a murder..
Phillip Marlowe is the last manic smoker in Los Angeles, he has principles and values. For example he doesn't ask his friend why he wants to go to Mexico following the code of friendship between men. Also we never see him rewarded for his work and he does not betray his friend even if he is forced to kill him in the end ( it is one of the most cruel and strange endings in the history of cinema ).
The hero behaves like a Knight and conveys Marlowe's sense of the world... The script shows us the cause of his alienation and nostalgia for the past. Also a sense of melancholy emerges when he keeps repeating " It's okay with me.", when you know that nothing is okay with him.
