The Long Goodbye is a 1973 American neo-noir satirical mystery crime thriller film directed by Robert Altman and based on Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel.  This movie is probably the best film adaptation of Phillip Marlowe's adventures with an excellent performance by Elliott Gould who is a 1953 character in a 1973 world!  The hero, without his intention, gets involved in a case containing stolen money, underworld, police, suicides, disappearances of people and of course a murder..  Phillip Marlowe is the last manic smoker in Los Angeles, he has principles and values.
